I have more than one "ID" on campus - what are they?

Every student is assigned two IDs: a unique NetID and a unique Student ID number. The IDs are different in design and both serve a different purpose here on campus, yet both are critical to understand.


Student ID Number

What Is It?

9 characters total. A dash or hyphen (“-“) followed by eight numbers. The dash is part of the ID.

Example: -13567890

7 characters total. Numbers and letters only.

Example: p11t499

What Do I Use It For?

Logging into Banner Web/My Info

Creating your D2L Brightspace (online classroom environment) and network password

Username to log on to computers on campus

Username to log into D2L Brightspace

Username to log into student email account

Username for Woonuit (training videos)


It’s recommended that you create one common password for the three different areas you might need to log into at Great Falls College (Banner Web/My Info, D2L Brightspace, and the on-campus network computers). Here’s how:


  1. Find your Student ID on your acceptance letter from Admissions or your bill from Student Accounts
  2. Go to https://www.gfcmsu.edu and click on Banner Web/MyInfo
  3. Look for Don't know your NetID and click on "Look it up here."
  4. Enter your Student ID in the box and click "Submit". (If you don't have your Student ID number, you can click on 'I don't know my MSU ID' and you will be asked a few questions to determine your identity.)
  5. Enter your birthdate in the format mm/dd/yyyy and click "Submit".
  6. The next screen should show your NetID, which looks similar to a12b345, write this down as you will need it. 
  7. Click on the link that says Self-Service Password Portal.
  8. New users need to click on “Go to Setup Tool” under the New User Setup on the Self Service Portal Page
  9. Follow the prompts entering your Net ID, Student ID, and Birthdate and setting up five security questions
  10. Under Password Reset area, click on “Go to Reset Tool” and create a unique password. This password can be the same as your Banner password as long as you used the same criteria required for your unique password. Use this unique password wherever you use your Net ID as your Username.


After creating password and receiving “Success” messages under “Status,” log into D2L Brightspace at the eLearning Portal, http://elearning.gfcmsu.edu, and take a look around.


D2L Brightspace = This is our online course management system used by both on-campus and online students.


Banner Web/My Info = Your online student account where you can add/drop classes, check grades, get unofficial transcripts, view financial aid award letter, check your balance, etc.
