Export Grades From Brightspace
How to Export Grades Go into the course. select the Grades link on the course navigation bar select the "Enter Grades" tab select the "Export" button The "Export Grades" area appears. (Note: The screen-shot images in this area correspond to a "Points" grading system. A "Weighted" grading system or "Formula" grading system will feature slightly different selections being available or unavailable.) back to top After choosing variables select the export button associated with the type of export to be conducted. There are advantages inherent to each type of export. A dialog box will appear with the file name and a "Download" button. Select the "Download" button. What the dialog box window looks like, how it behaves and so forth is dependent upon the browser being used. It is dependent on Operating System, browser and local computer setup where the download ends up on the local computer. Instructors can direct or place the file into a folder on the local computer that has been designated to hold grades for the course offering. Files can be renamed during the "Save" or "Save As" process during download -or- after the fact. A spreadsheet program can be used to open the file on the local machine. To read the file name that is generated: back to top When to export Grades from your Brightspace course offering Instructors can protect themselves by exporting the Brightspace Gradebook. Suggested - export grades out of course offering(s): at the beginning of the semester after grades area is initially established after the last date for add/drop has passed anytime a major change is made in the gradebook many new grades have been entered changes to the layout have occurred enrollment changes at the end of the semester just prior to performing final calculations after final grades have been released to students Electronic media is volatile so instructors should protect themselves. If an instructor is working in the Grades area and performs an action that cannot be undone AND that action negatively affects all grading work up until that point it is handy to have a clean file to import in order to be able to start again. If something unpredictable occurs, a downloaded export of a course's grades area can help - simply import the clean version and the instructor is back in business. About "Grades" file security: Files containing grades that are exported to an instructor's local computer are sensitive. Note that the Brightspace "Username" is the key field and is (typically) rendered as the external ID (consisting of first.last name). Care should be taken when handling these files. MSU-Bozeman support recommends that these files DO NOT stay on the local computer but are kept in a protected environment. One of the best ways to safely manage these files containing sensitive data is by using the Knox system that MSU-Bozeman UIT makes available to faculty. Select this link to access information related to Knox Note: When using the Exam Scoring Services of MSU-Bozeman, instructors retrieve score files from their established Knox folder. It is a two-way street - instructors can also use their Knox folder to store sensitive data such as exported grades documents by uploading them into their Knox folder.

Review Your Auto-Migrated Courses
Navigate to your Canvas Course Log in to Canvas at https://gfcmsu.instructure.com. When you log in, you will be in your Canvas dashboard. Select the desired course by clicking on the course card. Note: Depending on where we are in the migration schedule, you may not see all your courses immediately. However, all courses that will be migrated for you will appear by July 2025. Review and Organize Your Course Since migration is not always seamless, you must review and edit your content before sharing it with students. Keep in mind that some content may not transfer as expected. Create New Content Some migrated content elements may not transfer well and will require rebuilding. Canvas offers a versatile toolkit for creating new content, including pages, assignments, discussions, quizzes, links, documents, and external tools. Discussions Documentation Discussions Tutorial Video Modules - Structure the flow of your course and its content. Modules Documentation Modules Tutorial Video LTIs - Tools like Panopto that are integrated external tools to support your course. LTIs Tutorial Videos Set Up the Gradebook Each assignment's grades can be calculated as points, percentages, complete or incomplete, pass or fail, GPA scale, and letter grades. Assignments can be organized into groups for weighting. Gradebook only shows graded assignments, discussions, quizzes, and surveys published. "Not Graded" assignments will not be shown. “Not Graded” assignments will not be shown. To get started, review the written Gradebook Tutorial or the Gradebook Video. Weighting Grades You can organize your graded Canvas activities into groups such as "quizzes" or "homework." When you select this option, you assign a weight to the assignment group rather than to individual assignments. Canvas calculates the grade by dividing the total points a student has earned by the total possible points for all assignments in that group. For detailed instructions, refer to the Weight Your Gradebook Tutorial or Video. Copy Course Once your content is complete in your shell and your live course becomes available before the start of the semester, you can copy your content over using the Copy a Canvas Course Tutorial.

Import A Brightspace Course Package Into Canvas
If you have previously exported a Brightspace course and wish to import it into a Canvas course, do the following: Go to the course within Canvas that you wish to import the content into. Make sure you are on the Home tab of your Canvas course. Look for the button on the right side of the page that says "Import Existing Content" and click on it. Click the "Select Content Type" drop-down menu and select "D2L Export .zip Format". Click where it says "Choose File", navigate to the .zip file you exported from Brightspace and double-click to select it and upload it. Make any desired edits to the Content section or the "Adjust events and due dates" section. When you are ready, click on the "Add to Import Queue" button. Now just wait a few moments for your course content to be imported. NOTE: While import should work pretty well, there are some things that might not come over correctly, so after importing you should check the following. Once your import is complete, return to the Import page inside your course. To view the issues log, click the numbered issues link next to the "completed" box under "current jobs" on the Import page. This will display a list of items for review. 3. Review the issues and address each as necessary. Most issues will involve broken links or LTIs. For example, in the image below, Wednesday’s announcement must be relinked to the module titled Week 1. Refer to the Create Hyperlinks Tutorial to help you complete this task. 4. While the issues log indicates items in your course that may need attention, we recommend using the migration table and checklist below for a more thorough review of your content. Some issues may be difficult to locate through the log. Note: As you go through this process, it's helpful to have your D2L course open alongside your Canvas course to compare and confirm that your content has transferred correctly. Migration Table Migrates Seamlessly Migrates with editing Will not migrate. Requires rebuilding. Announcements Images Checklists Files Rubrics Internal course links Modules Surveys Web links Quizzes Assignments Dates Discussions Integration links (ex. Panopto Video) Checklist Assignments: Verify if assignments have been successfully migrated. (Note: The location may vary from D2L depending on how you set it up. Start by looking in “Assignments” in your course navigation menu. If you cannot locate it there, explore other areas such as discussion, files, or quiz.) Ensure titles and instructions appear as expected. Confirm the functionality of links and attachments. (Note: Refer to the resource How Do I Create Hyperlinks in the Rich Content Editor to fix broken links.) You may add due dates here, or you can add them when you move this content into your live course before the semester begins. Publish assignments if necessary. Review the groups in the Assignments area to ensure they align with your course structure (assignments, discussion, lecture, labs, etc.) Note:You can use these groups/categories to weight your grade book. Determine if any reorganization is required. Note:Some activities may not appear where they should be. Be sure to check in Assignments for a group titled "Imported Assignments." Canvas creates this for activities it cannot categorize into existing modules or groups. Consider relocating these activities to a more appropriate group or module for your course. Use the resource How do I move and reorder module items? to help complete this task. Discussions: Check for successful migration of discussions. (Note: The location may vary from D2L, so you may need to check multiple places. Start with “Discussions” in your course navigation menu.) Ensure titles and instructions appear as expected. Ensure functionality of links and attachments. (Note: Refer to the resource How Do I Create Hyperlinks in the Rich Content Editor to fix broken links.) Publish discussions if necessary. Quizzes: Confirm that all quizzes have been migrated, including question libraries, if applicable. Note: If you can't locate your question libraries, you can wait for your course to transfer through automatic migration in which it will appear as an Item Bank. Then, use this guide on How do I copy a module item to another course to move the content into your practice course. If you converted your Question Library in D2L into a quiz, use the tutorial How do I create an item bank in New Quizzes to convert it into an Item Bank. Ensure titles and instructions appear as expected. Check the functionality of links and attachments. (Note: Refer to the resource How Do I Create Hyperlinks in the Rich Content Editor to fix broken links.) Verify that images within quizzes have migrated correctly. Note: Canvas does not support images within individual answer choices, so if you used this feature in D2L, you will need to recreate those questions in Canvas. Publish quizzes if necessary. Modules: Verify the migration status of existing modules. Verify that links (external and internal) and files are working by clicking through modules. (Note: Refer to the resource How Do I Create Hyperlinks in the Rich Content Editor to fix broken links.) Use the resource How do I view a course as a student? to ensure that links function for students. Determine if any reorganization is required. Note:Some activities may appear not appear where expected. Be sure to check in Assignments for a group titled "Imported Assignments." Canvas creates this for activities that cannot be categorized into existing modules or groups. Consider relocating these activities to a more appropriate group or module for your course. Use the resource How do I move and reorder module items? to help complete this task. Calendar: Review calendar events for accuracy. Adjust any manually added dates. Additional Things to Check: Ensure all content is published for student access. Use Student View to verify course appearance.
